Film School: Status Report

I learned a lot this week as my now notorious group D shot two 30 second shorts based on the theme journey.

I was AD on the first one, and it was pretty damn frustrating. No one knew what was happening, except the director and he wasnt telling. Can you imagine? No storyboards, no shotlist nothing. It was, as he puts it "all in his head." Perhaps he is an off-the-cuff genius or more likely he just invented shots as we went along. I 've never seen such bad morale in a crew before. By the end everyone had lost interest, even the director. I could'nt beleive the lack of enthusiasm. How the hell did this guy make it in?

If I understand you correctly.

It sounds like you are saying few people understand the difference between being the (1 talent), the (2 employee) or the (3 commodity)

(This is going to get really thoeretical)


The commodity can be and is in his mind willing to be all three.

However the commodity must remain, in a work related situation, above the menial tasks; such as sweeping up the fake snow. Unless he has time to do so.

The commodity must delagate authority and or responsabilities with a reasonable expectation of said task being accomplished on or about the time expected by the talent and the labor.


In the given situation of the amature (CREATIVE NON PORNOGRAPHIC AS in EXPOSURE ON THE FREAKING SCI FREAKING FI CHANNEL ON FAMILY VIEWED TELEVISION BECAUSE IT IS NEAT AND GODDAMNIT NO THIS IS NOT A FUCKING COMMERCIAL) film maker (and who wants to run around with sore genetailia when they can be screaming at software companies because there is no such thing as an algorythm failure and the index says see chapter whatever and there is no chapter WHATEVER). sic......


I Spend time on this board not for entertainment although it is entertaining, or to sound smart I learn, i teach (perhaps)

you will find that there are plenty of people in the 'industry' just like that too, but thankfully virtually exclusively in television or corporate -- THAT is why video has such a bad name cos that is what these lamerz end up working with ...

I've been sayin this from the beginning: The fools should put you in charge. Off-the-cuff genius? Those are fewer and farther between then I am. Maybe the director speaks no english thats why he says nothing. Or maybe hes being paid to flunk you all out of school.
Just a though.

Well, on the second project I was DP. It was the journey of a remote control car through the campus-and beleive it or not-I actually had fun! This director(a girl-hurrah) could actually comunicate and actually asked for my take on each shot. I ended up editing her vid, and she was much better to work with than the other guy. Storyboards, shotlists, a script...wow it helped.

After being involved in the travesty of the first project i agreed to act in a third journey film for a different group. It came out quite well, so I may have saved myself by sneekily taking on more work than any of the others.

So, out of my 6 person group 3 have directed their own stuff, ranging from bad to pretty decent. You can bet, when Mr. Skin gets his chance he aims to take it.
